In an emergency, do not email

Call 911. The app has an emergency screen with your coordinates in several formats ready to read out to a dispatcher, at the bottom of the home screen.

Common questions

Is my license data sent anywhere?

Not unless you create an account. Without one, everything you enter — licenses, photographs, your ID image, your harvest log — is stored on the device and nowhere else.

With an account, the app locks your wallet on your phone with your password and saves that locked copy with Google Firebase, so it can reach your other phone and the Account page. Nobody at Elliott and Sons Consulting LLC can open it, and your ID image is never in it.

Otherwise the app makes two kinds of outbound request, both only when you ask for that feature: the National Weather Service for a forecast, and a state agency’s or the BLM’s map service for boundaries and tiles. Those are described in full in the privacy policy.

Will a game warden accept this?

That depends on your state, and the app tells you which. Most states now accept a digital license; some require paper for some license types, and some require the paper tag on the animal regardless. The possession rules screen names the requirement per state.

Sportsmen Ledger is a wallet. It displays a license the state issued to you. It does not issue licenses and cannot make a state accept a phone.

Does it work without a signal?

Yes, and that is the point of it. Once the app is on your phone it needs no network. Weather and live map boundaries obviously need a connection at the moment you pull them, but your licenses, the officer view, all fifty states of researched law and your whole harvest log work with the phone in airplane mode.

Why does my state show no unit boundary?

Because that state does not publish one in a form anybody can use. 35 states run a public map service the app reads live; the other 15 do not.

The app prints “no boundary pulled yet” instead of drawing something approximate. A boundary that looks authoritative and is invented is worse than no boundary, because you would act on it.

How do I move my wallet to a new phone?

Take a backup on the old phone and restore it on the new one. The backup is a single encrypted file: choose a passphrase, and the file is encrypted with it through PBKDF2 into AES-GCM.

The passphrase is never stored anywhere, including by us. If you lose it the file cannot be opened by anyone, and that is deliberate. Write it down somewhere that is not the phone.

I cleared my browser data and my wallet is gone.

Then it is gone, unless you have a backup. Everything lives on the device precisely so that nobody else holds it, and the cost of that is that clearing site data deletes it with no copy anywhere to restore from.

Take a backup after you add a license. The app prompts you to.

Why was my harvest rejected?

Because the species does not match the license you filed it against — a deer against a fishing license, or a trout against a hunting license. The app blocks it and says which.

An app whose one job is keeping you legal cannot hold a record that says you took something your license did not cover.

Can I enter a competition on the free plan?

Yes. Competitions are reachable from More on every plan including free. The rules carry a no-purchase clause and gating entry behind a subscription would make that clause untrue.

When is it coming to the App Store?

No date yet. The app is finished and working. The iPhone version goes to Apple’s TestFlight beta first, and then to App Store review. Email us for early access, and you will be told when it lands.

Something is wrong, or a rule is out of date.

Please tell us — that is the most useful mail we get. Email Billy@sportsmenledger.com with your state, what the app said and what the regulation actually says. Rules are researched from published regulations and they do change.
