Alabama hunting and fishing laws
The Alabama rules that catch people out, in plain English: hunter education, minimum age, blaze orange, Sunday hunting, shooting hours, baiting, night hunting, tagging and private land. Each one links to the state's own text.
Season dates for 2026-27. Page updated October 12, 2026.
These pages sum up the rules to help you find them. They are not legal advice. The state's own regulations govern, so check them before you go.
Hunter education in Alabama
All license buyers 16 or older born after August 1, 1977 must successfully complete an approved hunter education course. Students taking hunter education must be ten years of age or older.
Minimum hunting age in Alabama
The hunter education requirement is tied to license buyers 16 or older.
Blaze orange in Alabama
Applies to: Deer
You must wear a minimum of 144 square inches of hunter orange or fluorescent pink, or a full size hunter orange or fluorescent pink hat or cap. Only hunter orange or fluorescent pink is legal, and various shades of red as well as camo orange are not. It is required in areas open to gun deer season, including youth deer season and the special muzzleloader and air rifle deer season, and on WMAs.
Applies to: Deer
Exemptions cover an elevated stand 12 feet or more above the ground, an enclosed box stand, an enclosed vehicle, turkey hunting, nighttime fox, raccoon or opossum hunting, and hunting migratory birds including crows.
Sunday hunting in Alabama
Not verified. Alabama's 2026-27 season and hunting-law pages list no statewide Sunday hunting closure, but no agency statement that Sunday hunting is allowed was found, and local county acts were not checked. Confirm with the official regulations before you hunt.
Shooting hours in Alabama
Legal hunting hours for resident game birds and game animals including deer during open season are daylight hours only, defined as beginning 30 minutes before official sunrise time until 30 minutes after official sunset time.
Baiting in Alabama
Applies to: Deer
A Bait Privilege License is required and is valid only for white-tailed deer and feral swine on private land or leased lands. It is prohibited on public land, including Wildlife Management Areas. Hunting with the aid of bait is prohibited on public lands including WMA, SOA, USFWS, USFS, TVA and Corps of Engineers lands, and on public and private land within the CWD management zone.
Applies to: Deer
Without the Bait Privilege License the guidance is to keep feed more than 100 yards away and out of line of sight because of natural vegetation or natural terrain. There are no exemptions provided in the legislation, so it applies to all ages and to landowners.
Applies to: Bear
Alabama has no open season for black bear, so bears may not be hunted by any method, including over bait.
Night hunting in Alabama
Applies to: Furbearers
A separate night hunting license permits taking feral hogs and coyotes at night on any private or leased property where the hunter has permission to hunt, using night vision or thermal optics and weapon-mounted lights. The season window is published as calendar dates that change every year, so check the current dates. This license does not allow you to take any other game animal at night.
Tagging and reporting a harvest in Alabama
Applies to: Big game
Deer and turkey hunters must carry a harvest record, on paper or in the Outdoor AL app, record each deer or turkey immediately, and report it through Game Check within 48 hours. A deer report needs the date, county, land type (private or public) and antler point count.
Hunting on private land in Alabama
It is illegal to hunt, trap, capture, injure, kill or destroy any wild game on another person's land without having in possession the written permission of the landowner or person in control of that land.
Can you show your Alabama license on your phone?
Digital license yes. Harvest record in app or paper.
ADCNR says you can show your license on your phone: the app caches your “digital license” for offline use, though it advises “it is always important to have a printed copy with you in case the system is not connecting properly.” Alabama uses a harvest record, not a carcass tag: deer and turkey hunters must have a harvest record “(either paper or app form) in possession” and report through Game Check within 48 hours.
Phone with Outdoor AL app (printed backup advised)
